Periodontology

Clinical Research

The Department of Periodontology is dedicated to progress in the fields of oral and periodontal health.  As part of the effort to make progress in these areas the department engages in clinical research on a variety of subjects, develops new technologies and groundbreaking products while collaborating with international academic institutions and commercial companies in Israel and around the world.

The department's faculty are researching the following areas:

  • Examining the efficacy of membranes and bone substitutes in cases of bone loss.
  • Research on dental implants
  • Research on treatment of periodontal disease and inflammatory diseases around implants
  • Collaboration with the Department of Orthodontics on the connection between periodontal disease, gingival recession and orthodontic treatment.
  • Collaboration with the Ear, Nose and Throat Department - maxillary sinus pathologies, sinus floor augmentation

Basic Research

The department's research activity is focused on the immunological and genetic aspects of the development of periodontal disease (disease of the gums) and around dental implants.  Research is also focused on preventive techniques using a variety of preparations and treatments of periodontal disease, bone biology and differentiation processes.  Our laboratory techniques are among the most advanced in the world and include complex cell cultures, pre-clinical models, and bacterial cultures – using cutting edge molecular techniques.

The department's research subjects include, among others:

  • Development of periodontal diseases and diseases of dental implants (pathogenesis) using murine models
  • Interaction between the epithelium and pathogenic bacteria
  • Chronic inflammation and immunity tolerance in chronic infections
  • The role of bacterial molecules in the development of periodontal disease
  • Examination of the efficacy of unique molecules on the resolution of inflammation and prevention of periodontal destruction
  • Characterization of the inflammatory processes around dental implants (Peri-implantitis)
  • The role of the dendritic cells in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease
  • Examination of new regenerative materials and testing their effectiveness in infra-bony defects
  • Role of neutrophils in periodontal disease.
